The recent story about a 16 year old girl Shinjini Sengupta who went into depression and later paralysis after being rebuked by a judge in a reality show has raised questions upon the participation of minors in the ‘so called reality shows’. Doctors are trying to figure out the real ail of her disease. The incident has definitely put the reality shows in bars, but is it the real cause? The fast growing competitions in this modern age has lead to greater expectations and the talented ones blessed god’s grace, are expected to be always at the top in their specialized fields. The cause of Shinjini’s depression was the shame of her parents in the society as she was publicly rebuked by the jury of show.

I believe that the noticeable thing here in not the participation of the majors and the minors in such shows but also about the role of parents in their life. In this competitive age, parents push their children to excel in everything they do, which is impossible for anyone. There have been many times when a child was rebuked by the jury, then why those cases were not highlighted by the media. Today the classification of the major and the minor is not judged by age, but by the intelligence quotient (IQ). Every minor has to turn major in his/her life. Even a adult can have the same consequences in such kind of situation, then why we are just talking about the reality shows and minors? Isn’t the incident signify the unbalanced minds? Of course to very much extent the jury made a mistake, but they can’t be solely held responsible.

I full agree with the above statement that a jury/judge should ne be held completely responsible for such incidents...a lot depends on the EQ and IQ of the participant and most importantly the parents should ensure the child is made aware of this being just a competition and not something which is going to make or mar her/his life.

This is clearly the fault of Shinjini's parents for letting her perform in a high-pressure reality show despite knowing about hypersensitivity on being said something against. But again, the judge concerned should have shown some maturity as well. She is a victim of the vice called fame the society is arrested in.

Such shows should be banned because of the crass nature of the programmes. They earn millions by the SMS people send to vote in or out candidates. For instant fame putting such young kids under so much pressure is undesirable. Shinjini is 16 and not that young. I guess she has a neurotic condition.

They are everywhere. Even in the mainstream news channel you would find long programmes on these shows held by other channels. This is a big industry. Everyone wants to have a share of the pie. Small kids are being made to perform much to the delight of perverts and pedophiles.

I also think the use of such a term here is just unacceptable.

As a medical diagnosis, pedophilia means psychological disorder in which an adult experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children and may engage in child sexual abuse, also known as ” behavior”. A pedophilic person either has acted on intense sexual urges towards children, or experiences persistent sexual urges towards and fantasies about children that cause distress or interpersonal difficulty.

Hey Nishant, its for the very first time I agree with you, mate. LOL

This is leading nothing and no one anywhere be it the entertainment industry, the individual wannabes and the audience. Only the channels, the mobile carriers and the advertisers are gaining through such crap.

I think the judges in the reality show are supposed to JUDGE not let down the participants!
